The Local Organizing Committee (LOC) has announced the postponement of the 2023 African Games due to delays in preparing the necessary hosting facilities.
The games were supposed to take place from August 4 to August 19, 2023, but no new dates have been announced.
African athletic federations had threatened the events due to disagreements with the African Union over the commercial rights to the games.
These issues were resolved last week in Addis Abeba, on the sidelines of the AU Heads of State Meeting, when a new protocol agreement was reached.
Ghana has been struggling to prepare the necessary event-hosting facilities.
President Akufo-Addo initially announced plans to build an Olympic stadium in Borteyman for the games, but those plans were shelved in June 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since then, Ghana has decided to renovate the University of Ghana Stadium.
The postponement of the 2023 African Games is disappointing for African sports fans, but the rescheduling will give Ghana more time to prepare the hosting facilities and ensure the games’ success.
Sports fans across the continent are looking forward to the event’s new dates.
