The Member of Parliament for Ahafo Ano South East, Yakubu Mohammed, has issued an apology over remarks he made to a basic school pupil during a visit to Parliament House, following public backlash after a video of the exchange went viral.
In a statement released after the video began circulating, Mr. Mohammed said the incident occurred during an interaction with pupils of The Citadel School from the Sagnarigu Constituency.
In the viral video, the MP is heard telling the pupil: “You are very beautiful; when you grow up, I will marry you, so she is my wife. In future she will also be an MP.”
The comment sparked widespread criticism, with many Ghanaians questioning its appropriateness and calling on public officials to exercise greater sensitivity when engaging with minors.
Addressing the controversy, Mr. Mohammed explained that his remark was meant as a light-hearted joke rooted in the traditional joking relationship between the Mossi and Dagomba ethnic groups. He said as a Mossi interacting with members of the Dagomba community, the comment was intended in the spirit of that long-standing cultural bond.
“The comment was not intended to cause harm, disrespect, embarrassment or discomfort to the pupil, her family, the school authorities, the Dagomba community or the general public,” he said.
The MP, however, conceded that irrespective of his intent or cultural context, the remark was inappropriate because it was directed at a child.
“I sincerely regret my choice of words and render my unreserved and unqualified apology to the relevant authorities, the school authorities, the pupil, her parents and family, and the general public,” he stated.
Mr. Mohammed added that as a Member of Parliament, he understands the responsibility that comes with his public conduct and reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the dignity, welfare and rights of every child.
