President Donald Trump has set off a new firestorm in Washington with his latest hint about staying in the White House past 2028 – this time not for a third term, but a fourth.

What he actually said

On Thursday, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Record numbers all over the place! Should I try for a fourth term?”

It came just days after another headline-making moment. At the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Friday, July 24, Trump told the room of journalists:

“That’s why tonight, to show just how much I care about the press, and I want to save your ratings. I’m pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth time as president of the United States.”

He added: “I think I won three times. Now I’m going to do it again.” He was later photographed wearing a “Trump 2028” hat at the event.

Why he says “fourth” not “third”?

This isn’t a math error. Trump has long claimed the 2020 election was stolen from him. He previously explained that in his view, a hypothetical third term would actually be a fourth, because “the other election, the 2020 election, was totally rigged.”

The Trump Organization has leaned into the idea – selling “Trump 2028” hats and “Trump 2028 (Rewrite the Rules)” t-shirts, and in November 2025 Trump posted an AI image of himself holding a “TRUMP 2028, YES!” sign.

It’s part of a long pattern

The Times Now tally shows this is far from the first time:

• May 2024: Referenced FDR’s four terms and asked “are we going to be considered three-term? Or two-term?”

• Jan 2025: At a Las Vegas rally, called it “the greatest honor” to serve “not once but twice—or three times or four times.”

• March 30, 2025: In an NBC interview, when asked if he was joking about another term, he said “No, I’m not joking” and that there were “methods” by which it could happen.

• May 2026: At the Coast Guard Academy: “I’m going to be here in ’28. Maybe I’ll be here in ’32 too. I don’t know.”

Supporters often dismiss it as trolling to drive media coverage. Trump himself has framed it as humor about saving media ratings.

The constitutional wall

The biggest problem is the 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951 after Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected to four terms:

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

The full text also bars anyone who has served more than two years of another president’s term from being elected more than once.

Legal experts agree: because Trump has already been elected twice – 2016 and 2024 – he cannot be elected again in 2028, even if he skipped a cycle. Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee has said he is working on a proposal to change it, but barring an amendment to the Constitution, a third or fourth term is not legally possible.

Trump himself has acknowledged this at times. Aboard Air Force One in October 2025 he said, “If you read it, it’s pretty clear… I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad,” while still adding “I would love to do it.”

The reaction

The post immediately sparked backlash online, with many pointing out he was “skipping right over a third term and straight to the fourth”. Supporters treated it as a joke that would trigger “meltdowns”, while critics called it dangerous talk about democracy.

The “record numbers” claim also drew scrutiny. Recent polling suggests only about four in 10 US adults approve of his second-term performance, with 56% disapproving on the economy, immigration and cost of living. Trump has called those polls “fake” and “fraudulent.”

For now, the Republican field for 2028 has no clear frontrunner, though Vice President JD Vance is frequently referred to inside MAGA circles as “48” – the next president after Trump as 47.

So, is this a real plan or classic Trump bait? The Constitution says no, but the hints keep coming – and that’s exactly why it keeps dominating the news cycle.
