Long-serving goalkeeper Danlad Ibrahim has been spotted training with Asante Kotoko at Adako Jachie as the Porcupine Warriors intensify efforts to complete his permanent return.
The 22-year-old shot-stopper, who has been without a club after his stint in Ethiopia, joined Karim Zito’s pre-season squad this week with Kotoko pushing to secure his signature in the coming days.
Sources close to the club indicate negotiations are at an advanced stage, with both parties eager for a reunion just a year after his emotional exit.
A Homecoming 12 Months In The Making
Danlad’s return would mark a full-circle moment. The goalkeeper left Kotoko at the end of the 2023/24 season after eight years of service, ending an eight-year spell with the club.
He originally joined the club in the 2016-17 season after impressing with the Black Starlets and rose through the ranks via loan spells at Berekum Chelsea and King Faisal before establishing himself as number one.
He spent eight seasons at Kotoko with two spells at Berekum Chelsea and King Faisal before exiting to sign for Ethiopia Coffee in 2024 as a free agent.
During his time he captained the side and was unveiled as new club captain after leading Ghana to the 2021 AFCON U-20 title. He also made his senior debut in 2019 standing in for Felix Annan against Hearts of Oak in the Normalisation Committee Special Competition.
His final season was challenging. Danlad had a difficult season with Kotoko, losing his position to Frederick Asare and making only 13 appearances. The club eventually mutually parted ways with 11 players including Danlad after finishing sixth.
He subsequently agreed personal terms with Ethiopian Premier League side Ethiopian Coffee FC, where he spent the 2024/25 campaign.
Why Kotoko Want Him Back
Kotoko head coach Karim Zito is rebuilding for the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season and CAF Confederation Cup campaign. The club will commence its pre-season training on July 30 in Cape Coast ahead of the GHALCA Top 4 tournament scheduled for August 20–24.
Despite backing from his former teammates – Danlad recently backed the club to reach the group stage of the 2025/26 CAF Confederation Cup – the goalkeeping department has lacked experience since his departure.
Danlad brings huge pedigree: 2021 U-20 AFCON Best Goalkeeper, Ghana Premier League winner 2021/22, and a member of Ghana’s squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
For Danlad, it is a chance to reclaim his status. After previously having to reclaim his starting position despite impressive performances from Fredrick Asare, he will now be eyeing the No.1 shirt again as a more mature leader.
The Porcupine Warriors are expected to announce the deal officially once medicals and final paperwork are completed in the coming days.
