Ghanaian broadcast powerhouse Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has officially bowed out of Onua TV / Onua FM.
The announcement came in a live farewell video shared on Facebook [the video you shared], where the host of Onua Maakye brought his time at Media General to an emotional close.
In the video, Captain Smart was calm but clearly emotional. He took time to thank the management of Media General, his production team, and the millions of viewers who have followed him since he joined the station on June 1, 2021, after his exit from Angel Broadcasting Network.
He described his journey on Onua Maakye as one of the most defining chapters of his career, saying he was grateful for the “unwavering support and love he has received since joining the Onua TV family”.
This is not the first time he has hinted at leaving. In a similar live broadcast on Monday, November 20, 2023, he declared he was moving on, though the station at the time denied the reports. His final announcement this time came during the Monday, May 4-5, 2025 edition of the show – right after his birthday celebration – where he told viewers he was taking a long break and might not return.
In a follow-up clip from that same week, which has resurfaced alongside his farewell video, Captain Smart opened up about why he needed to step away.
“I think I’ve loved too much. It’s not good on my path. The only thing that has hurt me so much in life is that I love without thinking, and I care without thinking. So I am telling you I am going to block a lot of people from my phone after my show.”
He went on to add that he would delete his WhatsApp and cut ties with many contacts, saying he had been betrayed by people he loved and cared for too much. He noted his relationship with God was what rescued him from the pain.
Captain Smart’s departure marks a significant moment in his illustrious career. Known for his fearless, no-holds-barred commentary on national issues, he turned Onua Maakye into one of the most watched morning shows in Ghana.
Since announcing his break, he has kept a low profile, making only a few public appearances, including one with colleague Akua Sarpomaa where he gave an update on his future with Media General.
Media General is yet to announce his replacement.
For now, fans are flooding the comments of his farewell video with mixed reactions – some wishing him well, others pleading with him to return.
One era ends. Where Captain Smart lands next – whether it’s full-time Smart TV, a new media house, or politics – remains the big question everyone is asking.
