Girona FC have bolstered their backline with the signing of Ghana international centre-back Abdul Mumin on a free transfer.

The 28-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal that will keep him at Montilivi until June 2029. The move was confirmed today, 18th August 2026, with Girona announcing: “El Girona incorpora el central Abdul Mumin”.

Mumin joins as a free agent after becoming unattached on 1st July following four seasons with Rayo Vallecano. He originally joined Rayo from Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes in September 2022 and went on to become a key figure in Madrid.

During his time at Rayo, he made 63 La Liga appearances, scoring three goals and providing one assist, earning a reputation for his physical strength, aerial dominance and calmness on the ball.

His final season, 2025/26, was disrupted by a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that ruled him out for months. He recovered in time to make a remarkable comeback.

Born in Accra, Mumin earned his debut Black Stars call-up in December 2021 and finally made his senior debut in 2024.

His resilience after injury was rewarded with a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured as part of the Black Stars setup in North America.

The move comes after weeks of speculation. Earlier in the window Mumin had dismissed reports linking him to Girona as “fake news”, with multiple LaLiga clubs including Valencia reportedly interested. Girona have now won the race.

Girona, who are reshaping their defence after several departures this summer, see Mumin as a LaLiga-proven leader. At 1.88m, left-footed and comfortable playing out from the back, he adds both defensive solidity and experience to Michel’s side ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

He is expected to be presented later this week and could be available for Girona’s LaLiga Matchday 2 fixture.

Welcome to Girona, Abdul Mumin!
